Lippmann, Ott, and Wapelhorst Score in Local Junior Golf

Bloomingdale, June 29, 2005 -  On Wednesday, June 29th, the first of eight weekly junior golf tournaments was held at the Glenwild Greens Par-3 course in Bloomingdale.  The event generated winners in three age brackets.

In the 14 & over bracket, Ryan Lippmann of Wayne shot a 32 to defeat Kyle Wiedemann (34) of Kinnelon and Eric Frommer (36) of Wyckoff.  Lippmann balanced six pars and a bogey and two double-bogeys, including the 9th hole, to earn his victory.  A triple-bogey on the difficult uphill 4th hole foiled Wiedemann’s title run.

Alex Ott of Pompton Lakes birdied the 1st hole, survived a storm delay and went on to notch a victory in the 12-13 age bracket.  Taylor Crawley’s pars on the first three holes were his last, as he went on to record a 34 and a second place finish.  Ryan Smith (40) of Bloomingdale finished in third place.

David Wapelhorst of Kinnelon used experience gained in the morning golf camp to win the age 11 and under bracket with a score of 44.  Wapelhorst rattled the flagstick with his approach shot on the long 9th hole and sunk the resulting 4-foot putt to preserve his one-stroke victory.  TJ MacDonald of Kinnelon and Kenny Eisenhardt of Bloomingdale finished in second and third place, respectively.

Zucchi, Brigham, Welence, Crocco are Winners at Glenwild Golf

Bloomingdale, July 6, 2005 - The second in a series of weekly junior golf tournaments was held at the Glenwild Greens Par-3 course in Bloomingdale.

In the 14 & over bracket, Chris Zucchi of Kinnelon outpaced the field with a score of 33.  Zucchi’s steady round included four pars, and was anchored by a par on the difficult ninth hole.  Justin Connolly of Kinnelon, and Wes Brown, Ken McGovern and Sal Giardina (all of Pequannock) rounded out the top five finishers.

Former winners Tom Brigham of Bloomingdale and Tyler Welence of Ridgewood finished in a dead heat in the 12-13 age bracket.  Brigham charged out of the gate with pars on the first three holes, only to be caught by a charging Welence, whose round included a birdie on the seventh hole.  Blake Brown of Pequannock, previous week’s winner Alex Ott of Pompton Lakes and Kenny Turnbull of Ridgewood finished in close pursuit.

Tyler Crocco of Wyckoff took top honors in the 11-and-under age bracket.  Crocco did not have a par, but managed to shoot a steady round in the midst of intense competition.  Nine other competitors finished within five strokes of the leader.  Kyle Morris and Andrew Howarth of Kinnelon, Kevin Testa, Jon Schneider, Brandon Crawley, and Tyler Blind of Glen Rock, Kevin Fitzpatrick of Bloomingdale, Peter Perrota of Wyckoff and Andrew "Z" Zaleski of West Milford all turned in stellar performances.

Resnick, Crawley Takes Junior Golf Titles

Bloomingdale, July 13, 2005 - The third in a series of weekly junior golf tournaments was held at the Glenwild Greens Par-3 course in Bloomingdale.

In the 12 & over bracket, Greg Resnick of Ridgewood shot a 37 to outlast strong field and win the individual title.  Pars on the first and fifth holes highlighted a steady round for Resnick.  Rob Garvey and Thomas Brigham of Bloomingdale matched 39’s to tie for second place.  Griffin Abbott, Kenny Turnbull, Mike Pettenati and Tyler Welence, all of Ridgewood, finished closely behind.  Brigham, Abbott and Welence are all former winners of junior events at Glenwild Greens.

In the 11 & under bracket, eight year old Brandon Crawley of Glen Rock shot a 41 to edge Bron Loiselle and Conor Dillon, both of Ridgewood.  Crawley’s round included two pars, including the finishing 170-yard ninth hole.  Jay Decker of Haskell, Jack Macnee and Daniel Gubb of Ridgewood also turned in fine efforts.

Lippmann, Mullen, Anderson win at Glenwild

Bloomingdale, July 20, 2005 - The fourth in a series of weekly junior golf tournaments was held at the Glenwild Greens Par-3 course in Bloomingdale.

In the 14 and over age bracket, Ryan Lippmann of Wayne lapped the field with a 33 to win his second Glenwild tournament of the summer.  Lippmann’s round included a birdie on the difficult uphill 125-yard fourth hole and pars on the first, third and sixth holes.  John Yarish of Oakland, Kevin Jablon of Kinnelon and Matt Brigliadoro of Bloomingdale rounded out the top four finishers.

Chris Mullen of Ridgewood survived a three-way sudden death playoff to win the 12-13 age bracket.  Mullen made par on the second playoff hole to outlast Robbie Thomson of Kinnelon.  On the first playoff hole, former winner Curtis Miezeiewski of Oakland was eliminated after a three-putt bogey failed to match the pars made by Mullen and Thomson.  John Barney of Ridgewood (39) and Zach Eelen of Kinnelon (40) filled out the fop five spots.

In the 11 & under bracket, Chris Anderson of Kinnelon, fresh off a week of golf camp, shot a 40 to defeat Kevin Fitzpatrick of Bloomingdale (45) and Jay Decker of Haskell (47).  Jack Conklin of Wyckoff, Chris Donohue of Kinnelon and Chris Branton of Ridgewood finished in close pursuit.

Bishop, Brigham, Relyea, and Gordon Are Winners At Glenwild

Bloomingdale, July 27, 2005 - The fifth in a series of weekly junior golf tournaments was held at the Glenwild Greens Par-3 course in Bloomingdale.

In the 13 and over age bracket, Tyler Bishop of Ramsey defeated fellow Eddie Bain and Chris Nagel, also of Ramsey.  Bishop closed with three straight pars, while Bain and Nagel each suffered double-bogies - Bain on the 7th and Nagel on the 9th.  Patrick Rutkowski of Ramsey, Sarah Relyea of Bloomingdale, and Curtis Miezeiewski of Oakland finished in close pursuit.

Tom Brigham earned his second title of the summer season, firing a 36 to eclipse James Guggiari of Wayne and Robbie Thomson of Kinnelon by a single stroke in the 11-12 age bracket.  Pars on the 7th and 8th holes helped Brigham to the title, while steady rounds by Thomson and Guggiari were foiled by a bogey and a double-bogey respectively on the 9th hole.  Matt Betz, Hunter Flanagan, and Steve Lennon, all of Wayne, rounded out the top six finishers.

In the 10 & under bracket, Lauren Relyea of Bloomingdale and Harrison Gordon of Wyckoff finished tied atop the leaderboard.  Max Hofbauer of Kinnelon, Alec Roman of Oakland and Brandon Vabre, also of Oakland, also played well.

Brigham, Guggiari Tie For Title, Kuiken Wins

Bloomingdale, August 3, 2005 – The sixth in a series of weekly junior golf tournaments was held at the Glenwild Greens Par-3 course in Bloomingdale.

In the 12 and over age bracket, Tom Brigham of Bloomingdale and James Guggiari of Pompton Lakes shot near identical rounds of 34 to deadlock for the top spot.  Both players had three pars and both double-bogied the final hole to achieve their final total.  Ryan Fontanazza of Butler, Eric Frommer of Wyckoff, and Chris Hardy of Fairfield shot 40s to finish in a three-way tie for third.

In the 11 & under bracket, Brian Kuiken of Wyckoff capped off a week of golf camp by outdistancing the field with a score of 38.  Kuiken’s steady round negated solid rounds by Brian Kruser and Jake Gilman, both of Kinnelon.  Eight year-old Brandon Vabre of Oakland finished in fourth place.

Crawley, Szawaluk Win Golfing Daily Double for Glen Rock - Brigham Falls Short in Bid for Fourth Title

Bloomingdale, August 10, 2005 -  The seventh in a series of weekly junior golf tournaments was held at the Glenwild Greens Par-3 course in Bloomingdale.

In the 12 and over age bracket, Taylor Crawley of Glen Rock topped Tom Brigham of Bloomingdale, avenging a loss to Brigham earlier in the season.  Five pars anchored a steady round by Crawley, while Brigham’s three pars and a birdie (on the eighth hole) were offset by a quartet of double-bogies, foiling his bid for another first place finish.  Cousins Robbie Thomson and Zach Eelen, steady performers throughout the summer filled out the top five finishers along with Sean Battles of Pompton Lakes.

In the 11 & under age bracket, Matt Szawaluk of Glen Rock fired back-to-back pars on the sixth and seventh holes and then watched as late miscues from his opponents helped him take home the winner’s trophy.  Jay Decker of Haskell, Sean Dubits of Wayne, and Brandon Crawley of Glen Rock suffered scores of 8, 8, and 7 respectively on Glenwild’s difficult finishing hole, thus falling behind the score posted by Szawaluk.

Crawley, Stroever Win - Guggiari Falls in Playoff

Bloomingdale, August 17, 2005 - The last in a series of eight weekly junior golf tournaments was held at the Glenwild Greens Par-3 course in Bloomingdale.

In the 12 and over age bracket, Taylor Crawley of Glen Rock needed an extra hole to defeat James Guggiari of Pompton Lakes.  Both players hit the green on the first playoff hole, but Gugguiari’s birdie bid slid well past the hole and he failed to make the come-backer as Crawley tapped in for par and the win.  Both players had steady rounds in regulation play, Crawley making five pars to six by Guggiari, en route to their matching scores of 31.  Craig Doller of Hawthorne (34), Sean Battles of Pompton Lakes (34) and Greg Andrake of Glen Rock (36) rounded out the top five finishers.

In the 11 & under age bracket, Chris Stroever of Oradell played the last four holes in one-under par to win the trophy.  The scorching finish allowed Stroever to overcome triple-bogies on the first and fourth holes.  Previous tournament winners Brandon Crawley of Glen Rock, Matt Szawaluk of Glen Rock and Tyler Crocco of Wyckoff rounded out the top five finishers along with Robert Wapelhorst of Oradell.

Ramsey Junior Golfers Win at Glenwild Inter-Town Golf Match - Brigham Leads Tri-boro Team to Second Place Finish

Bloomingdale, August 24, 2005 - The Glenwild Greens Golf Course in Bloomingdale held a Junior Inter-Town Team golf match as a season finale to a series of individual golf tournaments.  Golfers from age 8 to 14 competed in a high school style format, where the best four of six scores counted toward the team total.  In all, eight teams competed in what was a fun-filled and competitive morning of golf.

Team Ramsey, consisting of Rob Archetti, Taylor Derleth, John Ehrline, and Patrick Rutkowski, took the overall title with a composite score of 159.  Rutkowski’s score of 35 paved the way, with a birdie on the difficult fifth hole offsetting a pair of double-bogies at the first and last holes.  Team Triboro (165) rode the coattails of Bloomingdale’s Tom Brigham to a second place finish, with contributing scores from DJ Escue of Kinnelon (42), and Kevin Fitzpatrick (46) and Steven Rizzo of Bloomingdale (42).  Brigham’s steady round of 35 included four pars over Glenwild’s challenging par 27 nine-hole layout.  Nine year-olds Kenny Eisenhardt and David Wapelhorst of Bloomingdale shared in the success of the team.

Taking third place was the Ridgewood-C Team of Griffin Abbott (44), Cooper Byrne (43), Chris Chersi (47), Andrew Toner (37), and Kenny Turnbull (42).  Toner’s round included a birdie and two pars which counterbalanced a quadruple-bogey 7 on the uphill fourth hole.  Cooper Byrne righted a sinking ship, after making 7’s on three of the four opening holes, as he went on to shoot two-over par on the final five holes, including 3 consecutive pars, to help his team to the winner’s podium.

Other teams included Glen Rock (175), led by Taylor Crawley (32), Ridgewood-B (180), led by Greg Resnick (43), Lakeland (Pompton Lakes and Oakland) (182) led by Curtis Miezeiwski (43), North Caldwell (188) led by Alan Jacobsen (40), and a youthful Ridgewood-A (208) team led by Jay Decker (46).  Crawley’s up and down journey combined two birdies with a double and triple bogey, to notch the low individual round of the day.

"Everyone looks at our (Glenwild Greens) scorecard and thinks ‘Hey, I can go low here’," says head pro and camp director Bruce Chamberlain.  "“But the reality is that this is a very challenging golf course where a small mistake can be very costly.  Just look at Taylor’s (Crawley) round.  His tee shot on number eight was just yards off the green, but he had to take a penalty drop and still faced a difficult chip.  There are no ‘gimmies’ out here.  Patrick (Rutkowski), Andrew (Toner) and Cooper (Byrne) can attest to that."  PGA pro Tad Kowal, an instructor at the summer camps, sizes up the ninth hole, "It’s as difficult a par-3 as you’ll find in the state (of NJ).  From 170 yards, it might just be easier to hold a shot on a ping-pong table."
