Bloomingdale, July 14, 2006 - "Here we go again!" lamented Mike Fitzpatrick as he watched Taylor Crawley of Glen Rock knock his tee shot close at the short but testy par-3 first hole at Glenwild Greens.  Crawley missed the short putt, but sank a 10-footer at #2 and chipped in on #8 to offset a double-bogey on the 5th hole to win the Glenwild Greens Junior Masters golf tournament.

At the Glenwild Greens Golf Course in Bloomingdale, more than 60 local area youths teed it up in the first of two junior tournaments to be held this summer.  Four age-bracket winners emerged closely contested divisions, three of four decided by just one stroke.  Fitzpatrick’s opening comment summarized the day, as former winners and top performers won in each of the divisions.

Crawley and Fitzpatrick came the 9th tee knotted at 3-over par.  Both hit their tee shots to the fringe of the green.  Crawly made a neat up-and-down for par, while Fitzpatrick chipped close, but missed the short par attempt.  Frustrated by the effort, Fitzpatrick missed the tap-in bogey to finish two shots behind Crawley.  Jag Chilana battled a belligerent putter all day, but managed a round of 36 for third place.  Mark Cecere and Chris Hardy of North Caldwell and Alex Ott of Pompton Lakes rounded out the top six finishers in the age 14 and over bracket.

(l. to r.) Taylor Crawley holds the winners trophy in the age 14 & over bracket, along with Mike Fitzpatrick (second) of Bloomingdale and Jag Chilana (third) of Franklin Lakes.

In the age 12-13 bracket, Kulpreet Chilana opened with five consecutive bogeys, anchoring a steady round of 37 with a par on the 8th hole to win his first Glenwild title.  Joe Licata of HoHoKus made par on three of the last four holes to counter two early triple-bogeys, only to double-bogey the ninth hole to finish one stroke back.  Sean Dubits of Wayne, Nick Jessourian of Franklin Lakes, and Bobby Parisi of Stockholm were deadlocked in third place, one stroke behind Licata.  Former (multiple) winner Tom Brigham and James Coromilas of Ridgewood were one stroke back of the third place trio.

It was a tale of two golf rounds on the road to the title for former Glenwild camper Kuriko Tsukiyama of Bogota.  Tsukiyama opened with a double-bogey and triple-bogey and finished with a quadruple-bogey.  Stellar play in between, including a birdie and two pars, enabled the 10 year-old female phenom to finish one stroke ahead of Zach Egermayer of Glen Rock.   Jack Macnee of Ridgewood finished third.  Conor Dillon of Ridgewood, Matt Quigley of West Milford and Harrison Gordon of Wyckoff also turned in fine performances.

In the age 9 and under division, Thomas DelliSanti of Nutley prevailed in a playoff over a feisty Liam Dillon of Ridgewood.  On the first playoff hole, DelliSanti hit his tee shot to within eight feet of the flag.  Dillon hit his tee shot thin and skipped it over the green into a difficult lie.  One tremendous chip shot later, Dillon was putting for par, but his failed attempt left the door open for DelliSanti to two-putt for his victory.  Jack Walter and Cameron Bradly of Ringwood finished out of the playoff by one stroke to net third place honors.  Cameron Bradley of Ringwood, Patrick Burke of Bloomingdale and Andrew Howarth of Kinnelon finished closely behind.

Eight-year olds Thomas DelliSanti of Nutley (left) and Liam Dillon of Ridgewood display their trophies. DelliSanti defeated Dillon in a one-hole playoff to earn the age 9-and-under title in the Glenwild Greens Junior Masters tournament.
