Bloomingdale, August 14, 2009 – A hot and humid Friday could not dampen the spirits of over 60 junior golfers at the Glenwild Greens Golf Course in Bloomingdale.  Two new winners and two repeat winners emerged from a field of veteran players.  Scores were high across the board, as the heat of both the air and the competition tugged at the players nerves.

Age 14 & Over:  Had Mary Tabatneck of Wayne been playing basketball, she would have been proud of her “triple-double” however the three consecutive double-bogies starting at the fifth hole was no cause for celebration.  The Pioneer Tour veteran and state-level junior player steadied the ship and finished strong to earn her first Glenwild title in several attempts with a nine hole score of 36.  Philip Thomsen of Ridgewood (37) and Sean Dubits of Byram Twp (38) took second and third place respectively.  Dubits' round included a tap-in birdie putt on the sixth hole.  Kevin Testa of Glen Rock and Tyler Crocco of Wyckoff rounded out the top five finishers.

Age 12-13:  Matt Quigley of West Milford started with three straight pars and finished with four straight bogies for a score of 36 to earn a sweep of the summer series at Glenwild.  In July, Matt won the Glenwild Junior Masters with a score of 32.  Brendan Wilson of Hawthorne and Anton Ferraro of Kinnelon finished close behind.  DJ Escue of Kinnelon and Kevin Fitzpatrick of Bloomingdale also turned in strong performances. Fitzpatrick holed a 20-footer for birdie on the opening hole, while Wilson made a 9-foot birdie putt on the eighth.

Age 10-11:  Michael Mazza of Ringwood (40) edged out Steven Gakos of Kinnelon (41) and friend Justin Regester of Ringwood (42) in the largest and most closely contested bracket of the day.  Mazza recovered from a quadruple-bogey 7 on the opening hole with a steady round anchored by a birdie at the 100-yard 8th hole.  Gakos and Regester were undone by the tough 170-yard 9th hole, Steven posting a triple-bogey and Justin a quadruple.  Kevin Lenthe of Butler (44) and Connor Davis of Kinnelon (46) finished close behind the leaders.  Brian Govlick of Kinnelon highlighted his round with a 25-foot chip-in birdie on the first hole.

Age 9 & Under:  Christian Less of Kinnelon scored par on the first two holes and cruised to victory over Davis Weil of Ridgewood (46) and (July) Masters champ Zackary Milko of West Milford (47).  The peewees played a modified course where three of the longer holes were shortened to accommodate the younger players.  Marina Hussein of Kinnelon (49) finished in fourth place and led a strong contingent of young linksters.
