Bloomingdale, July 17, 2009 – On the first hot and humid July day this summer at the Glenwild Greens Golf Course in Bloomingdale, 47 local area golfers teed it up in the Junior Masters, the first of two junior 9-hole tournaments to be held this summer.  In a field full of veteran tournament players, first-time winners emerged in three of the four age group categories.

Age 14 & Over:  Jake Lorenz of Ridgewood finished with three straight pars to earn a four-stroke victory over Tyler Crocco of Wyckoff.  A birdie at the third hole returned Jake to even par, and the steady finish remedied a bogey-double-double showing on the fourth, fifth and sixth holes.  Tyler’s steady round was blemished by a single double-bogey.  Joe Licata of HoHoKus finished alone in third place with a 38.  Deadlocked at 40 were Jay Decker of Haskell, Sean Dubits of Byram Twp, and Mary Tabatneck of Wayne.

Age 12-13:  Matt Quigley of West Milford birdied the third hole to capture a "bookend" trophy to place on the mantle alongside his 2007 Junior Open hardware.  Matt birdied the third hole and coasted home, despite being four over par on the last three holes.  A triple-bogey six quashed any hopes for a playoff bid for Ryan Less of Kinnelon, who settled for a 35 and a second place finish.  Jack Walter of Cold Spring Harbor, NY (formerly of Ringwood) birdied the eighth hole en route to a 38, good for third place.  Michael Paleno of Ridgewood, Zac DePhillips of Wanaque and Kenny Eisenhardt of Bloomingdale all had strong showings.

Age 10-11:  Fast forward five years and the Kinnelon High School golf coach may just be smiling.  Brendan Less (winner), Jon Paul Blasi and Steven Gakos, all of Kinnelon, swept the top three spots with scores of 36, 39, 39 respectively.  Brendan offset two double-bogies with pars on the sixth and ninth holes to earn his first place trophy.  Michael Mazza of Ringwood, Matt Carbone of Glen Rock, Josh Dimas of Wayne, Connor Davis of Kinnelon, Matt Lorenz of Ridgewood and Braden Ploehn of Wayne all turned in fine efforts.

Age 9 & Under:  Zackary Milko of West Milford was fresh off a week at the Chamberlain Golf Camp held at Glenwild Greens, and shot a sparkling 45 to record a victory in his very first tournament entry.  Zack made pars on the fourth and eighth holes to anchor his steady round and lead a group of five Kinnelon golfers.  Julian Ferraro, Christian Less, Austin Davis, Gabe Lipinski and Eric Moody trailed the neophyte winner.

The Glenwild Greens Junior Open will be held on Friday, August 14th.  On-line registration has begun for the tournament, which is open to all junior golfers age 5-17 of all abilities.  Caddies (over 14 years of age) are permitted.  Visit www.glenwildgreens.com to enter on-line or for more information on summer golf camps and tournaments.
