Sweeps Summer Series Wittig,
Carbone, &
Regester are First-time Winners Bloomingdale, August 15, 2008 – Despite an
ominous forecast that kept several players away, 53 local area junior
golfers teed it up at the Glenwild Greens Junior Open in Bloomingdale,
the second of two junior 9-hole tournaments to be held this summer.
Three first-time winners joined a 4-time winner in the four age
group categories. Age 14 & Over: It was déjà vu all over again, as Curtis Miezeiewski of Oakland swept the summer series in the senior bracket for the second consecutive year. Although not pleased with his final score, Curtis lapped the field with a 9-hole round of 30. Four bogeys were offset by a lone birdie at the third hole. Zach Post of Wayne and Sean Dubits of Byran Twp (formerly of Wayne) finished in second and third place, respectively. Nicholas Amico of Wood-Ridge and Eric Cooper of Butler rounded out the top 5 finishers.
Age 12-13: The bracket with the most players was also the closest contest of the day. James Wittig of Boonton posted 4’s on seven holes to card a steady round of 36, good for a one-stroke victory over Alex Graham of Kinnelon. Another stroke back in third place was (July) Masters runner-up Matt Quigley of West Milford. A strong Kinnelon contingent of Ben Wasserman, Nick Shah, TJ MacDonald and Shane Reardon finished close on the heels of the leaders, along with Matthew Regan of Wayne and Zac DePhillips of Wanaque.
Age 10-11: Fresh off a week of golf camp at Glenwild Greens, Matthew Carbone of Glen Rock carded a score of 38 to take home the winner’s trophy in the 10-11 age bracket. Previous winner Steven Gakos of Kinnelon finished second while Jon Paul Blasi of Kinnelon finished in third place. Kevin Lenthe of Butler, Sean Perry of Denville, Ethan Schlotterbeck of Bloomingdale and Connor Davis of Kinnelon also played well.
Age 9 & Under: Playing on a modified course (3 holes made shorter) Justin Regester of Ringwood shot a 42 and finished six shots ahead of friend (and previous winner) Michael Mazza, also of Ringwood. Austin Davis and Logan Escue, both of Kinnelon, finished in a dead heat (50) for a third place tie. Charles Swanson of Kinnelon, Jon Monaco of Denville and Matthew Lombardi of Newfoundland finished close behind the lead pack.
