Tsukiyama Repeat at Glenwild Junior Masters Cami
& Olsen Lead Strong Ridgewood Showing Bloomingdale, July 18, 2008 –
On a sweltering Friday at the Glenwild Greens Golf Course in
Bloomingdale, 81 local area golfers teed it up in the Junior Masters,
the first of two junior 9-hole tournaments to be held this summer.
Though tri-boro area golfers call Glenwild their home course, it
was out-of-towners that registered victories in four hotly contested age
brackets. Age 14 & Over: Curtis Miezeiewski of Oakland considered "hanging up his spikes" after sweeping the 2007 tournament series at Glenwild. Perhaps it was coaxing from his fellow golf camp counselors, or maybe inspiration from Brett Favre. Either way, Curtis is in the field for at least one more summer. Standing on the 9th tee Curtis held a tenuous one-stroke lead. He dropped his tee shot on the green of the 165-yard 9th hole, where he calmly sank the 15-foot birdie putt for a two-over par 29, tying the tournament record. Tyler Crocco (31) of Wyckoff recovered from a double-bogey on the first hole to capture second place. Kulpreet Chilana (33) of Franklin Lakes, also with an opening double-bogey, was third, Tied for fourth with a score of 35 were Greg Resnick of Ridgewood, and Mary Tabatneck and Robert Gilrain, both from Wayne.
Age 12-13: Twelve year-old Kuriko Tsukiyama of Bogota won her third consecutive Junior Masters title, holding off charges from Matt Quiqley of West Milford and David Wapelhorst of Bloomingdale. Kuriko anchored her steady round with pars on holes 3,4,5 & 8. Meanwhile, Matt double-bogeyed the ninth hole aftering parring 7 & 8. David closed one-under par on the last three holes, but it wasn’t enough to offset three double-bogies earlier in the round. Strong finishes were tallied by DJ Escue (39) and Traivs Nardin (39) of Kinnelon and Kevin Fitzpatrick (40) of Bloomingdale. "Kuriko is a graceful and talented young lady. She is very humble, and her prospects for future golf accomplishments are tempered with a perspective that belies her youth. It has been wonderful to watch her develop as a person and a golfer since we first had her in camp as an eight year-old," stated head pro and tournament director, Bruce Chamberlain.
Age 10-11: Seven of the top ten scores in this age bracket went to Kinnelon golfers, but it was Brian Cami (38) of Ridgewood that came out on top. An early finisher, Brian had to wait and watch as one competitor after another challenged for the lead only to fall short. More than an hour after he tapped in his final putt he held up the first place trophy. Last year’s Junior Open co-champion Brendan Less of Kinnelon and Benjamin Pastorious of Ridgewood were one stroke back with matching scores of 39. JC Sorenson of Ridgewood was alone in fourth place, followed by a strong Kinnelon contingent of Jon Paul Blasi, Connor Davis, Steven Gakos, Brian Govlick, Ryan Less and Kyle Presti. Chamberlain commented "If just some of these guys choose golf as their spring sport, the Kinnelon HS golf team will be looking to improve on their already successful program in the coming years. Many of them are new to golf, but they have a lot of talent and enthusiasm for the game."
Age 9 & Under: Greg Olson of Ridgewood capped off his round with two straight pars, for a winning score of 43. Sean Grant of Kinnelon and Dylan Peabody of Ridgewood finished in a dead heat one shot back. Sean bogeyed the last two holes while Dylan sealed his fate with a triple-bogey on hole #8, despite closing with a par. Logan Escue of Kinnelon (46), Jason Gordon of Wyckoff (48), and Will Mollihan (48) and Cole Peabody (50) of Ridgewood rounded out the top spots in this bracket.
