August 13, 2004
(full leaderboard)

Bloomingdale, August 13, 2004 – At the Glenwild Greens Par-3 Golf Course, nearly 60 local area youths competed in the second of two junior tournaments held during the summer of 2004.

In the 14 & over bracket, John Cece of Wayne shot a 30 to eclipse Kevin Toohey of Kinnelon (32) and Kevin Fontanazza of Butler (35).  Neither Cece nor Toohey scored worse than a bogey on any hole, while the victor highlighted his round with a birdie on the testy uphill sixth hole.  Fontanazza mounted a charge after a double-bogey on the first hole, but another double at the sixth foiled his comeback bid.

Curtis Miezeiwski of Oakland and Mike Fitzpatrick of Bloomingdale needed a playoff to determine who would hoist the 12-13 age bracket trophy, after matching scores of 37 in the tournament round.  Fitzpatrick’s tee shot on the first playoff hole skipped over the green, leaving him a four-footer to extend the extra session.  Miezeiwski claimed the title when Fitzpatrick’s effort lipped the cup and stayed above ground.  With a pair of 39’s, John Barney of Ridgewood and Justin Santillo of Pompton Plains squared off for the third place honor.  Barney’s birdie putt on the second playoff hole was the clincher.

Tom Brigham of Bloomingdale notched a birdie on the opening hole, which offset a disastrous score of  8 on the fourth hole to score a 40 and outlast defending champion Griffin Abbott of Ridgewood by one stroke in the 9-11 age group.  Abbott recovered from a pair of triple-bogeys on the opening holes to edge Ryan Hartline of Kinnelon, scoring a 41 and 42 respectively.  Hartline had the steadiest scorecard of the group, with no worse than a double-bogey on any one hole.  Close on the heels of the leaders were Daniel Cece of Wayne (43), Niklas Goebel of West Milford (47) and Tyler Crocco of Wyckoff (49).

Bloomingdale natives DJ Escue and Kevin Fitzpatrick have played many a round together over the past two summers.  Their matching scores of 40 for seven holes, propelled them into a sudden-death playoff, won by Escue.  Other strong finishers in the peewee bracket were 6 year-old Thomas Delli Santi of Nutley (42), Kuriko Tsukiyama of Englewood Cliffs (44), and Anton Ferraro (44) and Evan Lutz (47), both from Kinnelon.
